It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society's programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise. The Division publishes 85+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as numerous other high-quality products and services of benefit to the global community.
The Publishing Group consists of five main teams: Business Intelligence & Analytics, Chemical & Engineering News, Global Editorial Operations, Global Editorial Strategy, and Global Production Operations. Four of these teams collaborate to optimize the editorial direction and production of our journals, and to ensure that our authors and reviewers have a positive publishing experience. In support of that mission, the Global Editorial Strategy team focuses on the effective operations and strategic development of the suite of ACS Publications' journals, both hybrid and open access titles. This team delivers new products on an annual and ongoing basis, based on an assessment of the existing portfolio relative to the research landscape. The Global Editorial Strategy team also provides strategic guidance to ACS Editors-in-Chief to maximize the impact and success of the journals and is central to ensuring the Editors and editorial direction of the journals optimally serve the mission of the ACS.
Position Summary
The Associate Publisher is responsible for the strategic development of an expanded portfolio journals in materials science and engineering. The incumbent is responsible for assisting the Editors and ACS Publications staff with developing and implementing publishing strategies and editorial initiatives to sustain and enhance the journals' standing within the global chemistry community to ensure their continued growth and success. The Associate Publisher is responsible for the conception, development, and launch of one or more new product proposals/year and will support cross functional projects. The Associate Publisher manages a team of Managing and/or Development Editors with assigned day-to-day responsibilities for journals within the portfolio. The incumbent works with ACS staff from Global Editorial Operations, Global Production Operations, Business Intelligence & Analytics, Digital Strategy and Publishing Platforms, and Sales, Marketing and New Product Innovation to implement strategic initiatives for the journal portfolio. The incumbent also represents the journal portfolio to the scientific community through laboratory visits and both domestic and international conferences.
This position reports to the Publisher, Global Editorial Strategy.
Position Accountabilities
Required Education and Experience
Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in the sciences, preferably chemistry, materials science and engineering, or a related field, is strongly preferred; combined 7+ years of relevant training and experience in an academic or industrial chemistry setting; at least 4-6 years of experience in STM publishing required. Experience working with standard scientific literature databases (SciFinder, Web of Science, PubMed, etc.) and analysis tools strongly desired. Excellent written and verbal communication with both technical and nontechnical audiences, ability to make well-reasoned decisions and lead cross-functional teams; demonstrated ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities, as well as leadership and management skills are required. Portfolio management and product development skills preferred. This position is based at ACS Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Columbus, OH, or the office of ACS International in Oxford, U.K. ACS operates in a hybrid capacity with 3 days in the office (T/W core plus one other), and the preference is for this position to be based in Washington.Up to 20 percent travel will be required.

This position is based at ACS Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Columbus, OH, or the office of ACS International in Oxford, U.K.ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement.
