National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) has been blessed with a long tradition of service to people of all faiths. Since 1890, we’ve helped people find wonderful choices for retirement living, new options for financial security and expert services for health care and wellness. While staying rooted in our heritage, we have continued to plan for the needs of future generations we will serve. NLCS is a faith-based, not-for-profit ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s (ELCA) Delaware-Maryland, Metropolitan Washington, D.C. and Virginia Synods serving people of all beliefs. NLCS provides seniors with a variety of lifestyle, residential and health care options through retirement communities in Maryland and Virginia.

With 130 years of experience in senior services, National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) is a faith- based, not-for-profit ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s (ELCA) Delaware-Maryland, Metropolitan Washington, D.C. and Virginia Synods. 

NLCS is honoring its heritage while preparing for the future. In planning for future generations, in 2019 we refreshed our mission statement, established in 1890, to more accurately reflect the activities of the ministry now and into the future:

NLCS honors, inspires and supports choice and opportunity in partnership with older adults. 

Our mission unites staff, board members and volunteers alike, but what drives our care for seniors is our ministry, the heart of NLCS. We express that ministry in every facet of our work, from providing benevolent care for those who lack financial resources to meeting the needs of residents. You’ll see it in a nurse’s smile or the meticulous touches of a housekeeper.
