About the Lab:

We currently have an opening for a Senior Scientist to join the laboratory Dr. Cliff Brangwynne at Princeton University. The Brangwynne lab works on understanding phase transitions in living cells, including the development of engineering technologies for probing and controlling how different states of matter affect biological function. Through combining concepts and tools from soft matter physics and molecular cell biology, they have revealed how the condensation of various liquid-like assemblies throughout the cell drive the flow of genetic information and its dysregulation in diseases such as cancer and ALS. What you'll do:

  • Mentor graduate students, Research Associates, and staff.
  • Develop and implement research projects, and help draft grant proposals.
  • Conduct literature reviews to be used in determining most suitable research methods.
  • Configure, operate, and maintain specialized equipment; may train others in use of equipment.
  • Identify methodological problems in research protocols and develop solutions to those problems.
  • Review multiple operational areas or research projects both inside and outside the laboratory to determine if training will further research projects and goals. Trains on complex processes.
  • Prepare reports about research projects for presentation at scientific meetings and help draft manuscripts for publication.
  • Develop innovative techniques and systems required to meet research goals.
  • Review research activities to determine where new information could improve processes or move projects forward.
  • May coordinate specialized research functions such as microscopy, nucleic acid synthesis or sequencing, protein analysis, etc., in a core research facility.
  • May use software applications to assemble, manipulate, format and/or perform statistical analyses of data.

In addition to the duties specifically identified by this job description, the position will include other duties if and as assigned by the PI.

  • Shares responsibility for success of multiple research projects and/or project teams. May carry responsibility for project performed in collaboration with other laboratories. Mentors graduate students, Research Associates, and staff. Directs or assists in directing the work of others to meet project needs.
  • Assists in organizing individuals and resources within and outside of their own laboratory to meet research goals.
  • Assists in the review of multiple operational areas or research projects both inside and outside their laboratory to determine if training will further research projects and goals.
What you bring:

Education

  • Ph.D. degree in an biology, physics, engineering or closely related fields, or equivalent in education and experience. Requirements are not unlike those for faculty positions.

Experience

  • Broad range of scientific experience normally acquired through five to seven years in a senior research position.

Skills and Abilities

  • Technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaborative ability as well as independent thought.
  • Ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a diverse population
  • Advanced expertise in many areas with a full understanding of the underlying principles and concepts. Recognized by others outside their institution as a leader in their area of expertise.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.

Compensation Range

$136,730.00 (minimum) - $171,000.00 (midpoint) - $222,310.00 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
