Job Description

Inova Fairfax Hospital is seeking a Sterile Processing Surgical Technologist Liaison to join the team.

The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Surgical Technologist Liaison demonstrates professional and advanced knowledge of aseptic, surgical technique, surgical procedures, and SPD needs. This position identifies variances from expected outcomes and responds to changes in patient needs. This position serves as a liaison between the SPD and the Operating Room (OR) to ensure smooth, uninterrupted daily instrument support while the role facilitates continuous communication and performance improvement as it relates to surgical instruments. The Liaison coordinates with team members from SPD, OR, Service Line Leaders (SLL), Surgical Technologist Leads (STL), SPD supervisors, and Stryker personnel to develop a cohesive team. This position maintains a quality log of the department regarding OR defects and assists the department in reducing reported defects through lean process improvement and develops relationships that are positive among the department and its customers.

This is a full-time Monday-Friday 6:30am - 3:00pm position.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine job duties of the Surgical Technician in Sterile Processing as well as routine job duties of the Sterile Processing Technician.
  • Performs in preceptor role for new and experienced staff in the scrub role.
  • Shares knowledge with team members regarding instrument sets/techniques and procedures. Provides working knowledge of powered instrumentation, video equipment, microscopes, and complex instrumentation, equipment.
  • Participates in at least one unit-based committee/council and/or accepts individual assignments to work on improving patient care/unit-based issues.
  • Documents evidence of at least 15 hours of self-development activities with a minimum of 6 formal contact hours.
  • Coordinates an inventory of instruments and assures that patient/physician needs for specialty surgical instrumentation are met.
  • Coordinates sterile processing functions that are necessary to support the OR which includes the decontamination, processing, and sterilization of surgical instruments, and processing of the turnover of instruments for immediate use. Establishes and maintains an organized sterile field and applies principles of sepsis.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of anatomy and anticipates the required instrumentation for each step of a surgical procedure.
  • Coordinates needs based on EPIC picklist, SPM needs list, SLL special requests, OR schedule changes and unplanned changes in in surgical procedures.

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of hospital experience and/or previous practice experience as Surgical Technologist (experience must be within the last 5 years).

Education:

  • High School or GED.
  • Graduate of accredited Surgical Technologist program (preferred)

Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association
  • Certified Surgical Technologist through NBSTSA or equivalent governing body (preferred).
