We are seeking a Laboratory Manager to join the team of Dr. Bernardo Sabatini on-site at Harvard Medical School in Boston. The Sabatini lab seeks to uncover the mechanisms of synapse and circuit plasticity that permit new behaviors to be learned and refined. They are interested in the developmental changes that occur after birth that make learning possible as well as in the circuit changes that are triggered by the process of learning. About the Lab Manager role:

The Lab Manager will hold an integral role within the lab - directing the day-to-day operations involved in running the lab and serving as the liaison between the lab and various external partners. The successful candidate for this position is a highly organized professional with impeccable follow through, outstanding communication skills, and a strong growth mindset. In addition to operational management, the Lab Manager may also participate in the research efforts of the laboratory and occasionally contribute to scientific manuscripts.

The Lab Manager will be expected to work primarily on-site in the lab, but there is flexibility to work remotely 1 day/week if desired.

What you'll do:

  • Writing animal protocols and ensuring compliance with institutional and Federal guidelines with respect to health, lab safety, and animal care regulations.

  • Providing training and supervision in these areas and be able to command the respect of technicians and highly scientifically trained doctoral level scientists.

  • Maintenance of lab reagents (such as plasmids and antibodies), their databases, and handling requests.

  • Maintenance of equipment, infrastructure, and space allocation.

  • Onboarding of new personnel, including ensuring their training and compliance with both Harvard and Federal guidelines.

  • Liaising with vendors, ordering of supplies, maintenance of inventories, service contracts, and repairs of equipment while maintaining attention to the sources and uses of grant funds for these needs.

  • Initiation and management of orders using B2P and other methods and tracking supplies and expenditures on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

  • Handling financial activities such as monitoring budgets and communicating with Dr. Sabatini about spending levels and spending patterns.

  • Supporting lab team members with various research/experiment-related tasks.

What you bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in a scientific field is required.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience working in a research laboratory, preferably in a management capacity.

  • Previous research experience in molecular biology and/or neurobiology is required.

  • Previous experience training other people on various protocols.

  • Previous experience with mouse research is preferred.

  • Sense of self-motivation, honesty, trustworthiness, and ability to work in a diverse environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

  • Passion for efficiency, operational excellence, and process improvement.

  • Knowledge of standard safety regulations and appropriate laboratory practices applying to research in biology with demonstrated ability to engage others effectively in learning and applying appropriate practices.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and high attention to detail.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.

  • Knowledge of computers and MS Office software.

Compensation Range:


Laboratory Manager I - $75,350 (minimum) - $94,200 (midpoint) - $122,430 (maximum)

Laboratory Manager II - $89,650 (minimum) - $112,000 (midpoint) - $145,640 (maximum)

Pay Type: Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances.
