General Summary

Under moderate supervision, of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs trade level mechanic work in the areas of preventative maintenance, electricity, plumbing, HVAC, and mechanical repairs.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Moderate supervision needed. Follows general instructions and directions, plans own time to a degree to meet pre-determined schedules, work is subject to moderately direct supervision.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of the job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places, in outside weather conditions, and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and heat, risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous material requires the observance of standard precautions, and safe handling practices. This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move in excess of 100 pounds. Vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performs preventive maintenance on hospital equipment and systems.
  2. Installs, maintains and repairs heating and piping equipment and systems as needed.
  3. Installs, maintains and repairs heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems as needed under the direction of the Master HVAC-R Mechanic.
  4. Install and maintains mechanical systems and equipment.
  5. Reads, interprets and does layout work from blueprints, schematics, and mechanical drawings.
  6. Communicates proper repair and maintenance procedures to other mechanics as required.
  7. Completes assigned work & PM's in allotted time.
  8. Chooses the proper materials for the specific application.
  9. Performs maintenance work effectively.
  10. Uses, maintains and returns tools to their proper area or storage.
  11. Troubleshoots equipment and systems using schematics.
  12. Ability to handle, work within and maintain a Zone if assigned.
  13. Practices and supports departmental and specific area standards in daily work practices.
  14. Answer and responds to all calls in a professional manner.
  15. Works and communicates with assigned mechanics.
  16. Becomes familiar with locations of service interruption devices such as: electric,water, heating, medical gas etc.
  17. Understands mechanical devices and applications.
  18. Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  19. Moves equipment to be serviced and required.
  20. Exercises proper judgement when making repairs.
  21. Performs job tasks and responsibilities in an independent manner seeking directionwhen appropriate.
  22. Notifies the proper personnel when making repairs to their equipment or systems atthe start & completion.
  23. Enters all work: PM's, repairs etc. in to the computerized maintenance system accordingto established procedures.
  24. Ensures all materials and time are properly charged out for all jobs.
  25. Accesses the computer system for retrieval of data as necessary.
  26. Reports problem, unsafe conditions or changes in assigned jobs to his supervisor as soonas possible.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma with courses in shop, math, mechanical drawing, maintenance or related areas is required.
  • Four (4) years of maintenance experience may be considered in lieu of education. Maintenance mechanic in a health care or institutional facility preferred. A current and valid Maryland driver's license is required.
