Job Description Summary:Manages and maintains production and non-production databases. Sets and monitors standards and design of physical data storage, maintenance, access, and security administration. Performs backup and recovery on database management systems, configures database parameters, and assists in prototype designs against logical data models. Optimizes database access and allocates/re-allocates database resources for optimum configuration, database performance and cost. Performs performance-tuning investigations and provides suggestions and designs for performance improvements. Maintains database dictionaries and ensures standard procedures are followed. Researches database technologies and recommends deployment strategies for their implementation across the organization. Advises management on database concepts and functional capabilities. Participates in the implementation of strategic and tactical database initiatives.

Applies in-depth technical knowledge to complete assignments that are broadly defined, require judgment and creativity to complete, and require the identification and analysis of multiple and complex variables. Independently acts to solve a full range of complex problems/issues that arise in areas of assigned responsibility, but may receive guidance or expertise from higher-level staff on more complex problems. May establish processes/procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operation of complex functions.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Manages and maintains production and non-production databases in a Windows and UNIX-based networked environment. Participates in the database development process including the design, implementation, testing, and rollout phases. Participates on technology design and implementation teams as required to facilitate decision-making as it pertains to database environment.
2. Administers and supports Microsoft Structured Query Language (MS SQL) and other databases including Oracle in the test and development environments.
3. Provides database support for systems to units with customized databases or overarching database infrastructures.
4. Installs, upgrades, and configures relational database management system (RDBMS) and performs the migration of databases, data, and objects.
5. Performs backup/archive, restores, and recovery of systems and databases. Troubleshoots problems with hardware, software, and performance tuning. Provides rapid resolutions to database performance issues in the programmatic, query access, and physical hardware environments.
6. Applies or produces connections to/from applications for database interactions.
7. Recommends new database technologies and methods for implementing them. Works with technology management in the development and enhancement of database management methodologies and development guidelines.
8. Mentors staff involved in database development to ensure their continued knowledge growth and ongoing awareness of established guidelines and methodologies.
9. Maintains database dictionaries, ensures standard procedures are followed, and integrates systems through database design. Creates and maintains all documentation pertaining to the various database development architectures developed and projects undertaken.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Rational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), i.e. Oracle, SQL 2014 (and above), similar databases and database middleware (WSFC and FCI cluster). Knowledge of administration and development environments under multi-platforms. Ability to solve intellectual problems of substantial variety and complexity using originality and ingenuity. Ability to serve as a resource to others in the resolution of problems. Ability to use appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent knowledge.

Minimum Experience: Four years of related professional experience.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Manager. Sets objectives with supervisor.

Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $85,040 - $116,930. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range.

Work Environment: This position has been approved for 100% remote work from a previously approved location, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site locations.
