POSITION OVERVIEW
Our Embedded Firmware Engineer will report to our Director of Engineering and their responsibilities will include design, development, and support for ATI products, both legacy (non-OS products) and our newer products using embedded Linux for the user interface, communications, data/record keeping and data output. This includes design analysis and documentation, bug tracking, and version and release control. It also requires a knowledge of the tradeoffs between hardware and firmware solutions and the ability to contribute to the overall system design. Candidates should be familiar with device or instrument design.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop embedded code for Linux devices.
  • Contribute significantly to the System Architecture and Design for our newest products.
  • Understand and weigh in on the tradeoffs between firmware, electrical and mechanical implementations for embedded hardware design.
  • Transitions our products to modern communication interfaces (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth).
  • Ensure that documentation is completed for all product design and support.
  • Ensure that robust revision and release controls are implemented and followed.
  • Be willing to learn about the core technologies for ATI products, which include signal acquisition and processing, calibration methods and processes, and other key areas for our robust laser and photomultiplier-based stand alone and connected instruments.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews.
  • Provide trouble-shooting and technical evaluation of existing, new, and custom products.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of manufacturing test fixtures.
  • Assist with development of manuals and produce other written technical materials.
  • Assemble and test prototypes.
  • Process change orders, part number requests, and bills of material.
  • Interface with manufacturing engineering, marketing, purchasing and other cross-functional teams as required.
  • Interface with vendors/suppliers.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Background and Skills Required:

  • B.S Degree in Electrical, Electronics, Firmware or Software Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in product development.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience with embedded Linux or product variants of Linux for device development.
  • Experience with C/C++.
  • Experience with devices connected via the cloud.
  • Hardware knowledge.
  • Experience with debugging and bug tracking.
  • Experience with wired and wireless communication.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations.
  • Familiarity with stage gate development and/or Agile development.
  • Experience with development under a formal Quality System.
  • Strong team skills, has the ability to be a team player.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Background and Skills Preferred:

  • 5+ years developing products of similar scope and complexity to current products.
  • Experience with non-OS embedded device development.
  • Knowledge of ISO Quality Systems Requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Develops devices on-site at a standing or sitting desk, mostly sedentary work.
  • Occasional lifting 35 - 50 lbs.
  • Walks within the facility to move between areas to test products and work with partners in purchasing and manufacturing.
  • Visually inspects and works on designs on the computer up to 85% of the time.
  • Frequent repetitive wrist motion is used when operating the computer.
  • Listens to feedback on designs and verbally communicates progress of designs to key stakeholders within the company.
  • May travel up to 5-10% of the time.
