Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the maintenance of efficient and effective departmental operations.
    • Facilitates and ensures smooth coordination of department services with other departments.
    • Identifies internal and external customer needs and ensures provision of services to meet those needs.
    • Ensures that the work schedule is planned, implemented and monitored according to departmental policy.
    • Ensures the availability of necessary staff, supplies and equipment.
    • Ensures that all emergency equipment and supplies are maintained and monitored per protocol and are utilized appropriately to meet all standards of care.
    • Contributes to completion of information to ensure that data entry of patient information and charges is accurate.
    • Monitors and assesses department safety procedures to ensure patient, visitor and staff safety.
  • Hires and schedules staff to maintain appropriate staffing coverage of the department.
    • Provides coaching, counseling and disciplinary action as appropriate in a timely manner, holding associates accountable for clinical and behavioral expectations.
    • Terminates employees with approval of Director of Nursing and Human Resources.
    • Schedules regular staff meetings and facilitates dissemination of information, utilizing all available resources.
    • Participates in the review, restructuring and recommendation of programs and practices designed to improve morale, associates attitudes, staff development, working conditions and communication for all employees.
    • Fosters and maintains an environment of empowerment and supports effective shared decision making. Mentors staff to achieve professional development goals and professional services.
    • Supports staff in the understanding of changes in health care and encourages a creative response to those changes, understands and implements the dynamics of change management.
    • Evaluates position control form and hires appropriate staff to meet department needs.
    • Monitors and assures the provision of a comprehensive orientation for all new employees, in collaboration with the Education Department.
    • Conducts performance reviews on time.
  • Develops and implements educational activities.
    • Responsible for monitoring and assessing staff developmental needs to ensure competence.
    • Identifies individual/departmental educational needs. Facilitates education in-services in coordination with the Education Department.
    • Provides training and/or arranges opportunities to address educational needs of department.
    • Facilitates information in ALEX is completed.
    • Fosters an environment for staff development and professional growth.
    • Assures mandatory education is completed by associates.
    • Researches and implements changes in evidenced-based practice to facilitate updated practice standards yearly.
  • Responsible for monitoring of departmental budget.
    • Documents all variances and provides an action plan to support realignment with budget.
    • Exercises cost control by utilization of all data provided to monitor, evaluate and adjust actual expenses as compared to budget.
    • Monitors and assures efficient utilization of human resources, supplies and equipment.
    • Monitors daily patient charges to maintain maximum reimbursement.
    • Develops department budget with Director of Nursing
  • Responsible for monitoring and implementing continuous Quality Improvement initiatives.
    • Identifies CQI project opportunities.
    • Collects, reports and maintains appropriate data.
    • Identifies develops and implements action plans for corrective measures.
    • Participates in interdisciplinary CQI teams.
    • Develops and promotes staff involvement in the CQI process.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency guidelines and standards of care
    • Reviews and revises policies, procedures, and protocols for the department as needed to reflect current standards of care and practice yearly.
    • Identifies, facilitates, and monitors departmental QI activities by observation, report and written documentation to ensure quality of care, as needed.
    • Identifies develops and implements changes in practice for improvement of care as necessary.
    • Develops and/or implements hospital and department specific checklists, competencies and didactic skills to comply with regulatory agencies and standards of practice (Accrediting Organization, HIPAA, IDPH, OSHA).
  • Leads the development and implementation of a department plan to achieve excellent patient satisfaction.
    • Collaborates with department staff, other departments, and physicians to create and implement action plans to improve patient friendly processes.
    • Establish and enforces department behavioral standards for customer service.
    • Gathers, analyzes and communicates patient satisfaction data regularly, using data to identify opportunities for improvement.
    • Conducts patient satisfaction rounds regularly.
    • Benchmarks with other departments and other hospitals to identify and trial best practices for patient satisfaction.
  • Maintenance of personal professional growth and development.
    • Develops personal goals for educational and professional development in conjunction with the Director of Nursing.
    • Attends workshops, seminars, conferences and professional organization activities to enhance professional and personal growth.
    • Serves as an active member on appropriate committees.
    • Is a member of a professional organization related to Nursing Management and/or Clinical Specialty. (IONE, AONE, etc.).
    • Works collaboratively with community agencies (American Cancer Society, Lake County Health Department, Cancer Wellness Center, etc.) to provide collaborative services for the oncology patient/families.
  • Provides Nursing leadership and oversight to the Outpatient Oncology area for team members who are Registered Nurses.
    • Assures Nursing Orientation meets the needs of the patient populations served. Provides guidance and oversight to the content and structure of said orientation.
    • Encourages and promotes RNs attaining and maintaining national professional Nursing Certification.
    • Assures ongoing education and competency is achieved. Works with others to assure it is organized and attained by RNs in this department
    • Provides input into annual performance evaluation from the perspective of nursing practice for all RNs in this department.
    • Assures that nurses in this department are performing nursing care utilizing evidence based practice.
    • Works with other leaders in this department to assure that Commission on Cancer standards are met.

Licensure:

  • Nurse, Registered (RN)


Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area or enrolled and progressing
  • 5+ years lead or supervisory experience
  • 7+ years clinical experience


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • -Appropriate clinical skills -Good communication skills -Strong human relation skills
  • - Current RN licensure in State of Illinois - CPR Certified


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • - Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with established time constraints. - May be exposed to hazardous materials/diseases. - Requires flexibility to deal with changing environment.
