Job Summary

The music therapy fellowship offers one- year of experience to an entry-level (less than 2 years of professional experience in a pediatric setting) Board-Certified Music Therapist. The Music Therapy Fellow is responsible for providing therapeutic music interventions and assisting children with coping skills during health care experiences. The Music Therapy Fellow will offer music therapy services to pediatric patients of varying ages, diagnosis, prognosis, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Utilizing developmentally appropriate music interventions, the Music Therapy Fellow provides support to children and families in order to lessen the stress of the hospital experience. The Music Therapy Fellow, under the clinical supervision of a Board-certified Music Therapist will integrate knowledge of the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of children, adolescents and their families and integrate this knowledge into treatment planning and delivery of services. The Music Therapy Fellow will also act as a liaison to the community for music programs and philanthropy.

Essential Functions
  • Assess children and families at various stress points throughout their health care experience. Identify relevant data regarding the child and family to develop a comprehensive assessment and initiate a plan of care. Identify developmental and psychosocial factors and their implications regarding the child's healthcare experience in order to plan appropriate goals and interventions. Evaluate and document assessments, goals, interventions, outcomes and significant events. Modify care plans as needed. Make appropriate referrals when necessary
  • Based upon assesment of child and family, provide goal directed, evidenced based music interventions to encourage expression, socialization, pain management, process information and promote development. Offer music therapy interventions to minimize distress, promote empowerment, and provide opportunities for emotional intimacy and relaxation with families and caregivers. Support families through meaningful time spent together in a positive, creative way.
  • Functioning as partners with Child Life Specialists and as members of the multidisciplinary team, the music therapy fellow implements programs with groups or individuals addressing continuum of outcomes. Collaborates with health care team to enhance communication, foster patient and family-centered care and maximize positive outcomes.
  • Identifies available resources and promotes relationships with community organizations to assist with fiscally responsible purchases and donations to support the program. Partners with community and arts organizations and act as a liaison to offer music opportunities for patients, families and the community.
  • Develops and implements special music events for patients and families. Coordinates music events with community partners when necessary.
  • Maintain safety, storage and function of musical instruments by following toy cleaning and safety processes.
  • Introduces, collects, and creates Heartbeat Recordings for patients and families in memory making situations.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent Bachelor's, Bachelor's Equivalent, or Master's degree in Music Therapy from a school accredited approved by American Music Therapy Association.
  • Must have completed the clinical internship from an approved national roster internship site or a university/college affiliated internship site, preferably within the hospital setting.
  • Because of the educational component of this fellowship, the music therapist must have LESS than 2 years of experience in the pediatric hospital setting.
  • CRT-Board Cert Music Therapist (MT-BC) CBMT Certification Board for Music Therapist Must hold the MT-BC credential, issued through the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Music therapy interns who have not yet taken the board-certification exam may apply. If accepted, their position will be contingent on passing the exam before the fellowship start date. Upon Hire required

Preferred:

  • Experience with the following preferred: heartbeat recording intervention, recording and music technology, procedural support, bereavement support, collaborating with an Interdisciplinary Team, pain management techniques, adapted music lessons, and proficiency on drum set, violin and hand drums.
